Pre Evangelism in postmodern world

Several years ago, it was by divine providence that at a Ravi Zacharias meeting here in Dallas I meet a gentleman that would share the same vision in reaching the lost through Apologetics and Evangelism. It was there that I met (now) Dr. David Geisler. After we shared some of our concerns and problems in preevangelism, especially in my case with the spanish speaking people, we started a friendship that would lay the groundwork for what is now called Meekness and Truth. We had good times and difficult times as we got this off the idealistic launching pad. The struggles we went through to get concept artists to illustrate some of the difficulties in preevangelism, for Dave to get support for his ministry ( I didn’t have that much faith and was a volunteer only :) ) and find the right connections that would support, further develop and promote these ideas were among the things we endured when we started.

Our pathways then divided as I entered seminary and Dave moved his ministry to Singapore. As you will see, Meekness and Truth ministries has flourished to what at we would dream of during our lunch meetings at our favorite mexican restaurant in Dallas. May God bless Dave and that he continue to be used to impact thousands (literally) of students, at Singapore and the rest of the world.

I will include some of the interviews he did with students to show how apologetics and evangelism, which went hand in hand in the New Testament, is crucial for witnessing efforts today. In addition I will also show below some of the concept work that was done to better explain the issue of apologetics and evangelism.

From Meekness and Truth website:

The Birth of a Vision!

Our vision at Meekness and Truth Ministries is to re-equip the body of Christ in using pre-evangelism tools to supplement and strengthen our collective witness in a post-Christian world. We also desire to be a catalyst to lay people all across the U.S. to rethink how they are doing evangelism in this new millennium. Yet you may wonder how this vision come about: Growing up as the son of the apologists, Dr. Norm Geisler, I had an understanding of apologetic issues at a very early age, but did not feel compelled to follow directly in my father’s footsteps. Yet after I read J.P. Moreland’s book “Love Your God With All Your Mind,” I felt convicted that something had to be done to change this sad state of affairs in the church that the book addresses. Unfortunately, I didn’t see many Christian ministries really focusing on re-equipping the body of Christ to speak to this generation using a balanced apologetic approach. As a result, God led us to start Meekness and Truth Ministries. Consequently over the next few years we developed a model for pre-evangelism called “Conversational Evangelism.”

Last year (through the help of National leaders) we distributed this pre-evangelism curriculum to Campus ministry leaders all across the country. Yet I see that the church needs this kind of equipping as well. So our next goal is to develop a lay curriculum (based on the Conversational Evangelism model) and distribute this material to every major evangelical church in the U.S. in the next two years, with permission to use and adapt at they see fit.

Our goal is to play a part in building a bridge between the apologist and the average lay Christian. The fact is that most Christians are turned off by apologetics because it seems too modern and too confrontational for the kind of postmodern world we live in. However the pre-evangelism model we have developed teaches how one can use a less direct approach (still using apologetics) in one’s witness to others and remain sensitive to postmodern concerns.

Our deep conviction is that if the church only sees apologetics as useful for rigorous debate and argument, we may lose not only the next generation of youth who overemphasize experience, but also the very foundation for the Christian faith and its distinctiveness among competing religious beliefs.

This video shows the amazing spectrum of worldviews concerning things like the reliability of the Scriptures, relativism, truth, tolerance, and even apathy! Even the ones who confessed that they are believers at one time sound evangelical and at others they sound like postmodern relativists.

Please take the time to visit Meekness and Truth ministries and use their matieral in your training, presenting and or witnessing.

Jesus Camp Poster

Jesus Camp.

This report leaves more of a boot camp aftertaste in my mouth as opposed to the summer camp feel the program initially had in mind. I couldn’t help but think I would hear or did hear the English translation or transliteration for Jihad amongst those little campers. If those kids would have been speaking another language (as opposed to English and “tongues”), one could easily have envisioned a future suicide bomber in their midst. I thought the report made the whole evangelical, but especially the Pentecostal and Charismatic compartments, come across has VERY CREEPY. It made me want to pull my kids out of children’s church and avoid every future Kids Camp our church may be involved with. Footage like this Saving Holly
piece makes Christians in general seem so narrow minded, intolerant and brainwashed into robotically saving souls. It doesn’t depict most Christian’s normal day to day life having conversations with non-Christians about something other than their eternal destination. Now, while maybe I always introduce myself by saying, “Hi, my name is Juan, if you died tonight where would you go… Heaven or HELL.” Then closely following up that rhetorical question with “Why would my Jesus let you in to His heaven?” that doesn’t mean every Christian follows my example of living la vida loca.

On another note, being a youth pastor, I was also slightly offended, yet found myself chuckling, at how my colleagues or should I say peeps were portrayed. Youth Pastor is equivalent to skate parks, rock concerts, and being a republican if you actually think about politics beyond the abortion and homosexuality issues. I would love to put my two pesos in and simply say that the evangelical movement can include and indeed does include, youth ministries that read books written by NT Wright, discuss abortion and homosexuality as moral issues and discuss political issues knowing full well you can be a democrat and go to heaven and that many republicans are going straight to hell. I will be doing a follow up documentary about this movement’s other gathering; when Christians aren’t brainwashing kids at some charismatic, George Bush worshipping camp, they seem to be putting up a front as if they had some critical thinking skills by putting together conferences like this one…

The Literal American Idol- When a cult gets too hizzot to hazandle

I must congratulate Jose Luis de Jesus for being the first aberrational leader to put a video and a pretty face to a dangerous cult. I guess that in the marketing age we live in, where image reigns and soundbytes serve, it would be only logical to promote these dangerous ideas through these mediums. Although the song is in spanish any marketing guru knows that the image is more subtle and powerful than speech. In addition you will see faded throughout the video images of the false christ Jose Luis de Jesus as he is ministering. The song says:

En ti encontré la paz
Que nunca imaginé
Cambiaste mis temores
En gozo, amor y fe

Ahora puedo cantar
Como siempre soñé
Mi voz es como el viento
Ya no se puede detener

Eres tú mi inspiración
Mi alegría mi canción

Eres la fuerza que da vida a todo mi ser
Gracias a ti puedo volar
Tú has extendido mis alas
No puedo fallar sí conmigo
Tú estás

Gracias a ti puedo volar
Tú eres la nube y el viento
El cielo y el mar
Nunca me dejaras
Gracias a ti puedo volar

“In you I found the peace
of which I never imagined
You changed my fears
to Joy, love and faith

Now I can sing
Like I always dreamed
My voice is like the wind
It cannot be stopped

You are my inspiration
You are the happiness of my song….”

The somewhat sensual video shows singing sensation Martita Roca as she sings to her leader she calls “papi,”which is an endearing spanish term for father. If you follow the link to her site you can see her adoration for this false prohpet.

I can only image that if the any of the detractors or heretics of old had used this same approach they would of been more succesful in not getting immediately banned, written against, excluded, excommunicated, etc. I can see Siger de Brabant in Aquinas’ day using a rapper to promte his double dizzle truth fo shizzle. He might of saved himself from fleeing to Italy.
