Exciting things happening over at Meekness and Truth Ministries:

Dear Friends of M&T,

Thanks so much for your prayers for me while I was in India this last week. I know they made a big difference! Monday through Wednesday I taught at Ravi Zacharias Academy in Chennai (Madras) on the our C.E.
material as well as the topics: Truth, Postmodernism, Spiritual Growth, and also The Centrality of the Word of God.
On Friday night I was in the city of Hyderabad speaking to about 75 plus key lay leaders comprising of doctors, lawyers, and business people. Many shared that they were encouraged to be more proactive in their witness and have asked us to come back to do further training for the churches in that city. On Sunday I was back in Chennai and had the privilege to preach at Emmanuel Methodist Church to about 1000 people and three people indicated they trusted Christ and many made commitments to rededicate themselves to be a more effective witness.

You may also be encouraged to hear that RZIM in India is interested in forming a partnership with us and have asked us to train all their RZIM facilitators in India in our C.E. material so they can teach it wherever they go! Needless to say I was encouraged by all the fruit that came out of our trip.

Please continue to pray for our partnership with RZIM in India (we go back in March) and the important work in equipping Christians in India. This is a very strategic time for India (population 1.2 billion). Many of the youth have not totally accepted their parents'
Hinduism and with all the changes coming from the West along with a hunger for materialism, many youth are also searching for deeper answers. This is the time to really make an impact for Christ!

I was also reminded of the need for greater training when I learned that some of the Muslim Apologists in India are going from church to church and challenging the pastors and leaders in their beliefs, many who are not adequately equipped to answer some of the questions and issues that are being raised in a way to help their flock.

I've also included a few pictures of our trip. Please keep these Christians in your prayers.
Thanks for all your prayers and support for the ministry of M&T in Asia.

In Him,

Dave Geisler

NO PAT ANSWERS:MOVING TOWARD A MORE ENGAGING EVANGELISM|By Ray Ciervo

Posted on November 8, 2007 by Ray Ciervo.
Categories: Evangelism, Ethics, Worldviews, Cults Watch, Religion, Culture Watch, Apologetics.

A young man recently wrote to Billy Graham, who authors a column in the Charlotte Observer here in North Carolina. The young man was questioning a friend’s faith: “Every time I ask her why she believes what she does, her reply is, ‘Because it’s in the Bible.’” The young man acknowledged his skepticism concerning the Bible’s authority and in frustration asked Graham why he should believe. What his friend was doing was serving up a “pat” answer.

The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, 4th Edition, defines a “pat answer” as one that is trite or glib, superficially complete or satisfactory. “Pat answers” assume everyone understands what the underlying meaning really is. The problem is that the real meaning goes unobserved behind what is actually said.

Pat answers have had a very serious effect on Christianity. When Christianity was the dominant religion in America and when it had some influence in society and culture, it presumed everyone knew what it was all about. From a position of authority it responded with pat answers. Christians presumed everyone else knew the substance. Unfortunately, this has served to help undermine that position of authority and influence.

As we know today, Christianity is marginalized in American culture. It does not seem to have much authority and is looked upon critically as having no significant importance. What has happened?

Part of what has happened is that the Church has been asleep at the wheel. There were some who were warning of the impending storm, but most of the Church stayed asleep. We are kind of like the frog in the kettle. The illustration tells us that if you try to put a frog in boiling water he will jump out. However if you put him in cold water and slowly heat up the kettle, then you can boil him.

The world has changed on us much the same way. The changes have been slow over a long time. Few people realize how long ago it began….

The young man was questioning a friend’s faith: “Every time I ask her why she believes what she does, her reply is, ‘Because it’s in the Bible.’”

A QUICK HISTORY
The Mayflower Compact declared that the first Pilgrims intended to share their Christian faith as they settled in their new land. The founding fathers depended on God to guide them through the process of independence and the establishment of this nation. The government even sponsored evangelism among Native Americans.

It appeared this would be a nation which would have its roots in God’s Word and depend on His guidance. The influence of the first and second “great awakenings” had significant impact on the young nation. It appeared this would be a nation which would have its roots in God’s Word and depend on His guidance. Granted, some of the founding fathers were not perfect, but in most cases, they were God-fearing men. However, this was short lived.

In 1859, Charles Darwin introduced his Origin of the Species. This book had a profound affect on the scientific and religious community. Yet, that book did not discard religion or God as Creator of man. It wasn’t until 1871 that his Descent of Man, proclaimed that man evolved from apes. In 1925, the Scopes Trail, totally misrepresented by the play and movie, Inherit the Wind, made headlines over whether it was unlawful to teach evolution in public schools. The Christians won the case, though you would never know it. In 1933, the Humanist Manifesto was written declaring, “We need no God and no savior. We can save ourselves.” One of the signers of the manifesto was John Dewey.

John Dewey had a strategy to rid the public school system of anything that related to God and religion. His strategy called for training a generation of humanists who would teach American children. In the early sixties, school prayer and Bible studies were banned from public schools. It took Dewey’s strategy only 30 years to succeed.

THE NEW DOGMA
Today, few people realize what is being taught in schools and what will soon become common fare. Take for example just one professor who has had a devastating effect on education: Peter Singer. Professor Singer, chairperson for the Center of Human Values at Princeton University is an avowed secular humanist who teaches ethics at the university to future world leaders. However, his “ethics” consist of the ends justifying the means; he is a consequentialist, a utilitarian. Singer seemingly believes and teaches that abortion on demand should be commonplace. He also seeks to promote physician assisted suicide, and euthanasia. Some consider Singer a monster. To his credit, he has assisted famine victims and helped alleviate poverty in some instances. However, he is an atheist who holds to an evolutionary world view.

Educators of Singer’s ilk believe that in some cases, paraplegics, quadriplegics, the blind, and others who suffer and have no hope of a cure should be terminated. Babies born with deformities should be terminated under this chilling worldview. Ironically, Peter Singer is considered one of the brightest minds in academia today.

What is taught at the university level will soon become what is taught at the lower levels. It will filter down through the system until it becomes law. The effects of other legal decisions and advances of atheism have reached all of us today. As Christians, we have lost significant ground in every quarter.

THAT WON’T CUT IT
When we try to use pat answers today we realize they fall on deaf ears, even perplexed minds. “How could you believe something like that?” comes the reply. Pat answers don’t cut it anymore. In one sense, they never did.

But here is some good news…we live in a day of great opportunities for evangelism. You see, Christians are not the only ones guilty of giving pat answers…this is now the world’s mode of operation and communication. Advertising agencies, businesses, governments, and even educators are spouting trite, glib responses to the questions or circumstances surrounding all of us. “Just do it” and “No boundaries” are some of the cliches the Madison Avenue crew has picked up on. “Whatever” is the consummate pat answer today. It is the glib, trite expression that says, “Who cares?”

Here are some others: “That may be true for you,” “You can’t legislate morality,” and “All religions lead to God.” These are all trite, glib, self-refuting, pat answers. We must recognize the nature of the statements and bring them into the light of analysis. Each of these statements contain fallacies which betray the person who uses them.

Today, you have an opportunity to share your beliefs and ask probing questions of others. Of course, you must first understand what it is that you believe. Could you, for example, explain or even state your church’s statement of faith? Do you know what the essentials of evangelical Christianity are? Could you give a somewhat clear description of the Trinity, in terms that would not freak out the average listener?

When you talk about Jesus, to which “Jesus” do you refer? The Mormons have a Jesus. The Jehovah Witnesses have a Jesus. B’hai, New Age, and even the Hindus believe in a Jesus. Just which Jesus are we speaking about?

You cannot give pat answers and should learn how to recognize when someone else is trying to “put one across” on you. This is not a time for Christians to abandon sound doctrine and embrace a lightweight Christianity. This is the time for in-depth understanding of the basics of the faith and a time to engage people in Gospel conversation. This is time for the Church to rise up and meet the challenges it faces.

Building Interest In Our Gospel Step By Step In a Non-Defensive Way

Posted on August 18, 2007 by David Mendez.

Dear Friends of M&T,

Below is a write up of a recent pre-evangelistic encounter that I hope will shed some light on how to engage others spiritually without making them defensive. It also suggests some ways to build future pre-evangelistic bridges based on current interaction with others. My prayer is that it might stimulate your thinking in the area or pre-evangelism.

Blessings,

Dr. Dave Geisler

A few days ago I was working out in the exercise room at our apartment complex and a young Chinese guy (in his late 20’s) came in and started working out on the treadmill right next to the one I was on. Let’s just call him Raymond (that is not his real name). After about 10 minutes, Raymond was huffing and puffing and instinctively I looked over at him and said to him “If you think it is tough now, wait till you are my age.” That seemed to pique his interest to engage me in a conversation. I explained to him that up until I turned thirty, it wasn’t so difficult for me to “stay in shape” but when I got into my mid 30s it started getting more difficult and then when I turned 40, it was as though I hit a brick wall! That led to other conversations such as where he worked, what he did for a living, and etc. I told him that both my wife (who was a Singaporean) and I were teachers, she at NTU and me at East Asia School of Theology.

I realized that at this point I could have tried to engage him in a spiritual discussion since I mentioned that I was teaching at a seminary. However I realized this seemed a little too soon and abrupt and could make him defensive right away. He told me that he just started working out and since I am now in the exercise room almost every day, I knew I would bump into him again. As a result, I decided to wait for another opportunity to lay a plank in building my spiritual bridge. A few minutes later such an opportunity arose when I laid the ground work by telling him that my wife and I had moved to Singapore three years ago and shared with him some of the things I really liked about Singapore. This provided the platform for me to say “As a parent it is especially nice to know that when my daughter becomes a teenager I can feel confident she would be safe walking down almost any street in Singapore.” I told him that I could not say the same thing in my country, the U.S. (this was designed to set up what I was going to say next to engage him in spiritual dialog).

I said, “I don’t know if you know much about the religious history of the U.S. but  about 30 - 40 years ago the youth started rejecting belief in God. Now the problem is that once you have given up believing in God, you lose any foundation for believing in any kind of morality and each person does what he or she thinks is right.” I further said that “This has led to more and more moral decay in the U.S. society”. Then I asked him “Have you ever heard of a Christian writer named C.S. Lewis?” He replied that he did. I said that C.S. Lewis was an atheist who finally realized that without the existence of God there was no basis for saying that something was either right or wrong. I explained further that one day C.S. Lewis realized however that his argument against God was actually an argument for God! I told him that initially C.S. Lewis had difficulty believing in the Christian God when there was so much injustice in the world until one day he realized the flaw in his argument. He asked himself “How could I know that something was unjust unless I had some kind of standard of justice to measure the injustice by.” Furthermore he concluded, “How could I know that something was ultimately unjust unless I had an ultimate standard of justice in which I was measuring the injustice by?” So in reality C.S. Lewis discovered that his argument against God was actually an argument for God! Certainly this seemed to pique his interest. About a minute later he confessed to me that he has a friend who gave him a book that answers some of the questions people have about the Christian faith. (It was interesting that he would volunteer this info. and seem to suggest to me that he was potential open for further spiritual interactions). So from all of this I knew then he had a Christian friend in his past who tried to help him better understand the Christian faith. At this point we were both at the end of our workout routine and I could see that I had given him much to chew on for a while until our next encounter so I did not seek to engage him in further spiritual dialog. When you are engaging someone spiritually and you sense you are only going to get so far in one conversation, sometimes it is better for you to pull the plug on the spiritual part of the conversation first.
That way the other person doesn’t feel “pressurized” to buy what you are selling and it helps to keep the door open for further discussion.

Next time I see “Raymond” I will try to pick up from where I left off and say to him something like, “Oh I remember last time we talked you mentioned that a friend gave you a Christian book for you to read. I am curious, was there any particular reason that he gave you that book?” Was there any questions or issues you were trying to resolve in your own mind? By asking these two questions I am trying to discern what his major barriers to the gospel might be. This is an example of a follow-up question I would ask next. Hopefully I’ve laid some ground work that might make it easier for him to want to continue the spiritual dialog in our next conversation (1 Cor. 3:6).

Anna Nicole & The Evangelical Disaster Called Bob Larson

While we, for the most part, have mistakenly ignored tolerated the chick publication "tears for fears" worldview promoted by demon expulsion maverick Bob Larson; he on the other hand, has enlarged his generational curse drama to engulf the now world publicized death of Anna Nicole Smith. It wasn’t enough that Ole Bob has been under several investigative specials such as Inside Edition and Good Morning America. Now he makes his spiritual quakery known by way of the following:

February 15, 2007
Dear Friend,
Don’t let you and your family, and those you care about, suffer needlessly because Satan has the right to inflict pain and suffering through generational curses. Remove the legal right of Satan to your life. Let me teach you the right kind of prayers and renunciations that will once and for all break Satan’s hold on you and your family.
The death of the buxom blonde Anna Nicole Smith was no shock. Frankly, I’m surprised she lived as long as she did. She died because of her self-destructive behavior, but there’s more to it than that.
The media has incessantly talked about her untimely death. Anna was a former Playboy Playmate of the year and, at age 26, married an 89-year-old billionaire. She starred in her own racy reality show, modeled for Guess? Jeans, and then touted a weight-loss program.
On February 8, she was found dead in her hotel room in Florida. We don’t know the full report on her autopsy yet, but her family, and all those around her, are convinced that drugs played a role in her tragic death. The real issue isn’t what killed her, but why she died so young while surrounded by money, fame and the attention of millions.
The autopsy will only tell what physically killed her, not the spiritual reason behind her death. Anna Nicole was set up by Satan. Generational and family curses were hanging over her head from the day she was born. These curses grew stronger the longer she lived.
How can I so positively say I know what killed her? After three decades of confronting the forces of darkness and performing more exorcisms than anyone on the planet, I have learned valuable lessons about the destructive way that demons operate through curses. Let me explain how Ms. Smith’s life was under a curse.
Although her life seemed to be rich and glamorous, it was not always like that. She hungered for attention. In one interview she said, "I love the paparazzi . . . I’ve always liked attention. I didn’t get it very much growing up and I always wanted to be, you know, noticed." Why didn’t she get attention growing up? It probably had to do with the fact that her father abandoned her at a very young age. In a 2004 People magazine interview she said, “I don’t have any good memories from Christmas when I was a girl.” Her mother raised Anna (known then as Vicki Lynn Hogan) as a single parent. This curse of abandonment literally turned her over to the devil. If her mother had known what to do, she could have broken the curse. Anna’s life indicates that her mother did not break that curse.
On my DVD HOW TO BREAK GENERATIONAL CURSES I explain in detail how Satan continues his evil through the family bloodline, generation to generation. You must see this DVD to prevent Satan’s attacks on your children and grandchildren. You may not live a wild and immoral life like Ms. Smith, but you may still be cursed by your ancestors.
When she was a child, Ms. Smith declared she wanted to grow up to be like Marilyn Monroe. Well, she succeeded, down to the circumstances of her death. By wanting to be like Marilyn Monroe, Ms. Smith spoke a curse over her life and the devil used it to his evil advantage. Those who have seen our DVD HOW TO BREAK GENERATIONAL CURSES understand how unnecessary this tragedy was. The curse could have been broken. Also, notice that Anna’s 20-year-old son died just months before her, likely from the same cause—drugs and a destructive lifestyle. Nicole was born with a curse, so was her son, and so was her new baby daughter that lawyers and ex-lovers are fighting over.
Family curses can be broken! Generational curses can be stopped!
In addition to the DVD HOW TO BREAK GENERATIONAL CURSES I have especially prepared a message using the death of Ms. Smith to explain exactly how curses work. It’s called, THE CURSE OF ANNA NICOLE SMITH.
For your gift of $50 or more, I’ll send both DVDs, plus one of the most important documents you’ll ever hold in your hands: THE LAWSUIT AGAINST SATAN. This spiritually legal transaction will teach you how to legally confront the devil and file a lawsuit against him in the courts of heaven. Even though the letter speaks for itself, there are several blaring red flags that should be noted. Before that, let me mention that the main reason I even speak about this is because this is contrary to anything close to what a sound Christian worldview is and also because for too long we have listened to these spiritual P.T. Barnum types that have tried to lead many people astray.

The Red Flags:

1. "Satan has a right to inflict pain through generational curses." There is absolutely no solid biblical support to even build a theology of generational curses. These ideas were popularized by writers such as Marilyn Hickey and Rebecca Brown. Please see this. This is more a ploy to overplay Satan’s control over people in general and even Christians in particular and underplay our new redeemer, our new nature and the grace of God.

2. "Let me teach you the right kind of prayers and renunciations that will once and for all break Satan’s hold on you and your family." Typical of this type of approach is the revelation that only he has the once and for all and final answer to what otherwise you would have never found through regular Christian practices like, mmm…. I don’t know; maybe a relationship with God, a good reading and study of His word, and maybe even a normal prayer with our Creator?

3. "The autopsy will only tell what physically killed her, not the spiritual reason behind her death. Anna Nicole was set up by Satan. Generational and family curses were hanging over her head from the day she was born." To have that kind of spiritual insight is beyond human capability and to spiritually diagnose someone at that  level is not only unbiblical but it’s only something God can do (Psalm 139).

4. "Her mother raised Anna (known then as Vicki Lynn Hogan) as a single parent. This curse of abandonment literally turned her over to the devil. If her mother had known what to do, she could have broken the curse. Anna’s life indicates that her mother did not break that curse." Curse of Abandonment? Who decided this and didn’t invite me to the meeting? This is again STRICTLY unscriptural and an offense to all of the single parents out there that have not been "turned over to Satan." Notice that he did not even make a distinction of whether you were a believer or not. His main qualifier was "if her mother had known what to do." Again, we go back to point one where you overemphasize the technique or procedure and underemphasize the person of God and the glory that pertains to Him.

5. "On my DVD HOW TO BREAK GENERATIONAL CURSES I explain in detail how Satan continues his evil through the family bloodline, generation to generation. You must see this DVD to prevent Satan’s attacks on your children and grandchildren. You may not live a wild and immoral life like Ms. Smith, but you may still be cursed by your ancestors." Again, same concept: All you absolutely need is in this ________________ (insert trinket, charm, holy water, prayer cloth, tie here) and Satan aka. "El Cukuy" will stay away from you for ever. This sounds too much like a vampire story and nothing like the biblical worldview where Satan, the world and our sin will influence us toward disobedience (if we are children of God) and that spiritual warfare is a reality that is included in our worldview Eph. 6:10-18. However, his word tells us that we are his children and that greater is he who is in us than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4).

6. "For your gift of $50 or more, I’ll send both DVDs, plus one of the most important documents you’ll ever hold in your hands: THE LAWSUIT AGAINST SATAN." Speaks for itself.

I wish I had more time to critique the rest but you get the picture. According to some personal sources, Bob used to be a great defender of the faith and dealt extensively with cult research in his early years in ministry. However, as many who without accountability or guidance wonder down the "cookie" and lopsided road of extreme spiritual warfare, Bob worries too much about the dark side and gains some $$ (at people’s expense) while he’s at it.
